Invited to a Meeting with the Arbeitsamt?Don’t Panic—Here’s What You Need to Know

If you’re receiving Arbeitslosengeld (unemployment benefits) in Germany, you may eventually receive an invitation for an in-person meeting at the Agentur für Arbeit (Arbeitsamt) or Jobcenter.

First thing first—don’t panic. Receiving this invitation is completely normal and part of standard procedures for job seekers receiving benefits. This meeting is not a punishment or interrogation but rather a way for the Arbeitsamt or Jobcenter to check in on your job search progress and see if they can offer you additional support.

In fact, you can use this meeting to your advantage by demonstrating proactiveness, discussing your challenges, and even requesting additional help such as career coaching or job training programs. If you approach the conversation strategically, this can actually work in your favor.

Continue reading to find out how this meeting can benefit you.

Pro Tip: Bring the invitation letter you received with you to the meeting. When you arrive, the reception desk will check your invitation, confirm your appointment, and guide you to the correct office. This will help you navigate the process smoothly and avoid any confusion.

How Often Will You Be Invited for a Meeting?

When you first register as a job seeker, you will be assigned an advisor (Berater) at the Arbeitsamt or Jobcenter. You can expect an introductory meeting early on, where they will discuss your job search strategy, available resources, and expectations.

After this initial meeting, it’s common not to hear from your advisor for months. In many cases, they won’t reach out again for three to six months unless you request an appointment yourself.

However, if you are eligible for 12 months of unemployment benefits, you should anticipate a check-in around the six-month mark. At this point, they will want to review your progress, discuss any challenges, and assess whether you need additional support.

If you have been unemployed for a long time, they may become more involved in helping you re-enter the workforce and may start offering job placements, training programs, or further meetings.

Why Are You Being Invited for a Meeting?

There are several reasons why the Arbeitsamt or Jobcenter may request a meeting with you. The most common ones include:

  • Routine check-ins – To review your job search progress and discuss your next steps.

  • Application verification – To ensure that you’re actively applying for jobs as required by your benefits agreement.

  • Support and guidance – They may offer job search assistance, career coaching programs, or further training opportunities.

  • Clarifications or updates – If you’ve uploaded applications to the portal, they may still want to discuss them in person or check for additional updates.

Receiving an invitation doesn’t necessarily mean anything negative—often, it’s just a standard part of the process.

What Will Happen During the Meeting?

Discussion About Your Job Search

  • You may be asked how many applications you’ve submitted, which companies you’ve applied to, and if you’ve had any interviews.

  • They might inquire about challenges you’re facing and offer job placement assistance.

Providing Proof of Your Job Applications

This is where many people feel anxious, but in reality, it is rather rare that they require proof of actual applications.

  • For the most part, a self-made list of the jobs you’ve applied for is enough.

  • I personally was in this situation years ago, and my list was always sufficient. Now, as a career coach, I work with many people in similar situations, and I can confirm that a simple list is usually fine.

  • In fact, most advisors don’t even ask for that. However, it depends on the advisor—and, honestly, based on my clients' experiences, even their mood on the day.

That being said, be proactive and prepared. If they do ask for verification, having confirmation emails or responses from employers can be helpful.

Also, do they check your email account? No, they cannot demand access to your personal email. However, they may ask you to show job application emails on your phone or laptop if they suspect missing records.

Language Barriers: What If You Don’t Speak German?

If you don’t speak German, which is often the case for foreigners, it is very important to prepare in advance. Here are some ways to ensure smooth communication:

  • Practice useful phrases – Even if your German isn’t perfect, showing effort will be appreciated.

  • Bring a translator – If you’re not confident in your German skills, bring a friend, family member, or professional translator with you.

  • Request an official interpreter – You can ask the Arbeitsamt or Jobcenter if they can provide a translator for the meeting.

Fluent communication will help your case and make the process smoother.

How This Meeting Can Actually Benefit You

Many people worry about these meetings, but in reality, they can be an opportunity to receive additional support.

For example, you may be offered funding for a career coach through an AVGS voucher. If you don’t know what that is, I explain it in detail here:
AVGS Voucher Explained: Unlock Free Coaching and Training.

If you are genuinely looking for a job, you can request an AVGS voucher during this meeting. Doing so will show effort and initiative, which advisors generally appreciate.

If you think upskilling could improve your chances of landing a better job, you can also explore the Bildungsgutschein, which covers career training. More details here:
Bildungsgutschein Explained: Your Path to Free Career Training and New Opportunities.

The good part of receiving AVGS or Bildungsgutschein funding is that for the duration of the training or coaching, the Arbeitsamt won’t bother you with further meetings.

Final Thoughts

If you’ve been invited for a meeting with the Arbeitsamt or Jobcenter, don’t panic—it’s a normal part of receiving unemployment benefits. As long as you’ve been actively applying for jobs and can provide proof if asked, there’s no need to worry.

Use this meeting as an opportunity to discuss job opportunities, further training, or career coaching options that could help you land your next role faster.

If you’re genuinely looking for a job and want extra support, this is a great time to request an AVGS voucher for career coaching. And if you need upskilling, ask about Bildungsgutschein funding.
